the war was over, the Nazis had gone, Germany was now on our side (as it still is). Russia meanwhile was becoming the new enemy we had to contend with, having made use of the war to colonise much of eastern Europe. A cold war rather than an armed one, but a confrontation none the less.
Amongst other things we had a garrison in Berlin, cut off by land from British occupied Germany
