Ever been somewhere with an aged parent or grand parent and they came out with something that just left you gob smacked ?
My old nan is in her 80s but some of her sayings have you trying to shove her in the car quickly.
Once heard to say about a black guy walking down the street " he looks like he just fell out of a tree " !!!
Or the other one was when she said theres something not right i reckon " theres a ni**er in the woodpile "
Now exactly where and when these were thought to be normal i can only guess.
Have your oldies ever done or said something equally as embaressing ?

My mum who is in her late 80s is just the same. Only last week she said "if I want a ******** I'll have one and no b*gger will stop me!" She said she had a black doll when she was a child and every time she chipped it she had to rub black boot polish on it. lol
When I came in from play dirty & mucked up, my nan (and my mum) used to do the old trick of spitting on their hankies and rubbing away at my face, calling me a 'dirty little arab'.
I refrained, thank god, from spitting on my hanky to rub at my kid's faces when they were grubby, but I must admit I did often call them dirty little arabs. We just didn't think anything of that expression at that time - we just grew up with it & didn;'t think of it as offensive or disgusting. However the spitting/hanky bit - now that was disgusting.

It's not only the oldies that aren't PC legend, Dawn French rang her mother and said " you know when I was little, you were always telling me about the big black bogeyman who would come and get me if I didn't go to sleep? well, he's come and got me" Bet Lenny wasn't to pleased. I haven't laughed so much in a long time at some of these answers, must get out more.
my nan used to get told that about the 'black man'll get you'. She said when she first met one as a small girl she just stood there and screamed hysterically non-stop - mother suitably embarrassed then!
the same nan had an electric massager one xmas - (yes you know what's coming) - during xmas lunch she announced to the whole extended family that
'that vibrator you brought me Martin (my dad) works a treat, i've not enjoyed myself so much in ages!'
wish i had a picture of all our faces, trying not to laugh

I am of the older generation and know these terms very well, we were bought up with them and yes I use them (but the n***** in the woodpile only at home) I am not deriding black people, but it means practically invisible. In our days we had to call black people "coloured" as we didn't want to upset them. It's very hard to overcome a lifetime of phrases so you must forgive us older folk. We mean no harm, if we did, we'd whop you with our handbags or zimmer frames. Put that in yer pipe and smoke it!!!
