How do you feel about getting old, is it a subject you steer clear of, does it scare you? I admit I am terrified of ending up a doddering remnant of the man I was, dependent on nurses or carers, tottering around in a walking frame or worse ...bedridden. There is no way on Gods earth that I will ever let it get to that.

Im 50 soon and I cant wait BUT a part of me is frightened as thats the age our kids dad died at and I just cant bear the thought of history repeating itself.

Anyway -I hope I have enough time to say my goodbyes to all the people who have been special in my life and make it easy for them.

I dont fear death at all -I just fear that I go too early and suddenly for our children and believe me its a very real fear.
I agree with you Dris. When I thought I might have to leave my children, it was fearsome.
I have two old schoolfriends who I have known for fifty years .
We met aged eleven ! We are now in our sixtieth years and to be honest we say to one another " good grief where have all the years gone " But that's life .We still act like silly schoolgirls when we meet up for a jolly once a year . It's been once a year too lately as family go and kids leave home . Sometimes we didn't see each other for ages but we always stayed in touch. And we joke that the older we get we'll probably be tottering round Hyde Park on our zimmer frames .
You simply cannot let the fact that you are getting older worry you .I'm at least a quarter of an hour older since I looked at this thread and if the Editor would put a shilling in his meter it may save another grey hair :)
At work we watch The Weakest Link and Eggheads on tv and the 20 somethings sit there for an hour without answering a single question

Thanks heaps everyone there were some really fabulous answers, made me feel a lot better. Guess I was feeling a bit down. You see my daughter has just moved out of home to do her own thing,we are very close and I was devastated when she told me. Very selfish on my part I know ,but so hard to see her go,even if it it only 23klms away.
Dont even think of age.....you never feel older than 20 even when you're 90. Think of the years of experience & wisdom to live and share. Who knows where the next open door will lead you? Every second of life is better than the end.
Thanks Elvis... you are quite right ! Now where did I put my memories... I had them last week lol
Moving answers, and I can identify with some better than others. Age is really a state of mind. When I was younger I might have thought about doing the Captain Oates bit, but with time I`ve come to know that Life is the most precious thing in the universe and not to be thrown away under any circumstances. We learn from experience and I`m a firm believer in going through a door when it opens in front of you. In years I`m 72 and just embarked on my 4th marriage.

I`ve been studying the afterlife for many years and I try to learn from those wiser than I am. As someone said, death is not to be feared rather to be looked forward to as an exhilarating moment and the lead-up years to it, whether they be less pleasant or not, should be learnt to be accepted. All happens for a reason.
