Can anyone tell me is it safe to use a transformer whose output is 500mAmp in a device (a guitar effects unit) which specifies 300mAmp DC input ? The voltage is correct. Is it reasonable to assume that the device will only draw the current it needs ? Or will it be snap crackle pop time for the device ? I'm too poor to buy the real one so that's why I'm asking.....

It will only draw the current it needs. If the power supply had a lower power rating than the device and the device drew a lot of current then the power supply would probably overheat, but drawing less current than the rating shouldn't be a problem.
