There is no doubt that the power of denial plays a large part in the minds of some contestants.
Obe problem is, their loved ones tell them they have talent, because they wish it was true, not because there is talent there, or that they would recognise it if it were.
I think there is a degree of pointing and laughing in the appeal of the show. I always feel sorry for the genuinely bewelidered, but less so for the cocky and rude ones.
The two young lads who sang a Wombats song, and were advised by Cheryl that the tall one had a bad attitude were a case in point.

At its best, X-Factor ceclebrates a triumph of genuine skill and ability, at its worst, it does mock the afflicted, but either way, it is still excellent TV.
