laptop not connected to the internet when desktop turned off

i have connected a wireless router to the desktop and subsequently a laptop connection to the router. However when i turn the desktop off, the laptop loses its connection to the internet, I have a netgear wgr614. Any ideas please. Thank you

the spec says

ADSL or Cable Internet Service and modem with Ethernet connection

so it's a repeater router not an all-in-one

you should have bought a router which included an adsl modem

Are you on cable or ADSL, and do you have a separate modem? Also - this might sound stupid - but is the router powered up when the main computer is turned off?

cable, i have a seperate router and seperate modem, i now found the rotuer power was not set into plug correctly thank you for yr help
