toilet training!!
I know this topic has been done to death but now its my turn to get this working! my son is 3 in 4 weeks and in pull ups. he can say when he wants the loo and will go and other times he will do no. 1 and 2 in his pull up. H e does this in nursey too. i keep saying to him'tell mummy when you want to go' but not quite there yet.
Are boys slower than girls? We go abroard next summer and then he starts nursery school in sept. Will he be ready by then??? Are all kids at nursery school toilet trained?? thanks

at 18 months he'd do all number 2s on his potty. By 3 years though he had reverted and was doing everything in his nappy.
We tried everything and gave up, we realised that it was just stressfull for him and us and to let him do it in his own time.
Now at 3yrs 4 months hes dry pretty much all day and often asks to go in night too (though he still has nappies at night)
He just got up one day and called us to say he needed to go. We got to his bedroom and he'd already stripped off and sat himself on the potty. We then put him in trainer pants which he kept dry all day for a couple of weeks til we braved the underwear again. Hes never looked back, he doesnt even ask for help.
Nursery was fine, he started in nappies and when he learnt to go himself he just continued it at nursery.
Let your little boy decide for himself, he will do it in his own time.
I was just as you and worried that he wasnt ever going to grasp it.

hi. my son was about three and a half before we finally cracked it. i tried all the bribes in the world. the thing that worked was stickers. got some really exciting boy ones trains cars etc. when he performed he got a sticker and then when he got ten he got a little pressie etc. my daughter was fickle - she fell for the chocolate!
Mine were dry (apart from a few accidents) and clean from 2. Perhaps I was just plain lucky. I just took them out of nappies when they obviously had control and risked the few accidents and accepted them with no fuss. I honestly believe that that pull ups, etc. just defeat the object because they defeat the object of toilet training. (My son would not use a potty in front of anybody - humans, like animals prefer to be alone or discrete when they go for a poo!)
Children in native tribes that don't ever wear nappies are very quick in developing bladder and bowel control.

My daughter is 2 yrs 9 months. She started showing an interest in potty training very early, from about 14 months. It was very much one step forward, two steps back sometimes.
She is now dry at home and nursery pretty much all day. At night she still wears nappies. Nap times she's just coming around to being dry and wearing normal knickers instead of nappies. I got rid of her pull-ups at bedtime and have reverted to cheap smartprice nappies as she can feel the wet and doesn't like it (hence makes more effort to go on the potty!).
Having said that, she has phases where she tells us she "can't be bothered" to use the toilet / potty. Also when we're out and about or at other 'unfamiliar' places she'll just plain forget to ask to go to the toilet. Again she's slowly getting better at this.
In Asda over the weekend, I saw a book by Gina Ford called "potty training in 1 week" or something ridiculous - I laughed out loud when I saw it. Ahhh if only!
Children learn at different stages, some later than others and some take to it straight away and in the case of my daughter it's a long drawn out process, but you will get there in the end - don't worry about it :o)

My youngest son was 3.5 before he was out of nappies. He wore pull-ups through the day but never had an accident and used the toilet. At night he was dry from the age of 3 but I think he liked the security of wearing a nappy. He went to nursery from the age of 3 and was the only child not wearing proper underwear. One day he came home from nursery and announced he didn't want to wear nappies & pull-ups any more as all his friends wore "big boys pants."
I agree that boys can be slower than girls in this area. Don't make a big deal of it. I never heard of a child starting primary school in a nappy.

I did the toilet training in less than a day technique with my two boys when they were around the age 3 mark - they both went from totally untrained to trained in the day and we had very few "accidents". We never combined pull ups and training though. We didn't try at all until they day that we did the training.
This is the book we used.

The repeating 10 times if they have an accident is a bit over the top if your child gets it after 3 or 4, I would leave it there. It also doesn't have handwashing in it, so we swapped the emptying their own potty for handwashing.
We were also lucky that the boys were both tall and were able to reach to pee standing up straight away, much more fun than sitting! We used the toliet target training balls, but you could just use a ping pong ball and draw a face on it.
