I'm having a bit of difficulty with my last entry 13d..
Great piece of art, ahead of the rest? The row gets complex.
If the wordplay is ..The row gets complex..i.e.an anagram of "The row gets", then I am left with the first letter as a "G" whereas to "take on TV form" I really need it to start with "B". Perhaps I'm misreading the clue...any help appreciated.
Good Morning K , and sorry....yes, 10 letters starting with "M" initially which I make MASTERWORK, but has to be altered (four letters in this case) before entry to "take on TV form". The grid entry (not a proper word) is indicated by the wordplay.
Not very clear I know, but it's early days yet, and I didn't want to spoil it for others.
I evidently haven't properly understood what is going here. Slaney, how do you know there are four letters to change (apart from the fact that the letters don't check)?
They are not all 4 letters (eg. 1ac has 5) but your conjecture seems correct -- can't say much more without giving the game away. Some of the TV forms are fairly easy to get and the corresponding "undressed" versions might suggest themselves - the rule should become clear.
Thanks, slaney. The penny hasn't dropped yet but I have hopes.
I'm particularly puzzled by 3D, where the wordplay makes a sensible word but the changes forced upon me make nonsense. I hope I'm right to assume that non-special words are not affected by any changes.
Hi Ross...think of the less common meaning of TV, as defined in Chambers.
You are correct to think that non-thematic clues are unchanged.
3d is thematic.
Thanks, slaney. When the penny of 3D finally dropped I saw the theme and the type of change to make. I have only one left now.
(I only just now found your answer. Tracking this thread doesn't work for some reason, and with the dodgy search function it takes ages to find it again !)
