'Assonant' means having vowel-rhyme.
could the shilling be dollar?
sixpence was a tanner, but I've never heard of anything other than 'bob' for a shilling.
Seeing that it is the 'Scotsman' crossword, the answer is almost certainly 'minnie' for 'mother', that being an old Scottish nursery-word with that meaning.
In British slang, a dollar meant five shillings and the half-crown...2 shillings and sixpence...was called a half-dollar. I've never heard it used to mean 'shilling'.
