After having had quite a few problems now with AVG 8.0 i.e always asking me to restart pc everytime i switch on, telling me it is out of date back to the date i installed it, no indication that e-mails have been scanned although settings are correct ???.........can anyone recommend a good free one ??? Thank You

avg is pretty good, try uninstalling it & reinstalling. Another good freebie is avast http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/downloa ds/2128339/avast-home-edition
Make sure you only have one anti virus installed though.
