Do you have to pay to get a legal will written - if you do, then I won't be doing it right now!!!? Whats the best foolproof way of doing it (with the least cost and hassle)?

You do not HAVE to pay a solicitor to write your will, if thats what you mean. You can buy a will 'kit' from WH Smiths (eg) which will tell you what to do. You could even write your own will if you wanted to and get it properly witnessed. Now here is the BUT, if you dont do it correctly and /or legally then you may give big problems to your heirs. If your affairs are simple, then you may wish to consider DIY, if not then pay.
