Could be wrong, but the way I remember in my first aid training is that something has to be stuck in order to do a chest thrust (the action is used to force the stuck object back up the airway) but seenas you hadn't eaten/swallowed anything, I don't think this was the way to go. Completely understand why your hubby may have done it tho, must have been very scarey for both of you. Hope your ok now x
O sorry -bit ,me being me would phone NHS24 or else I would worry.
Patricia -were you or are are you under stress at all -dont answer on here but just think because to my mind its like a wee panic attack and they can hit you when you least expect it.I was once getting it on with H and I had one and I tell you it took me all my time to compose myself as I knew if I didnt continue then I would be fearful forever.I did and although i still have flashbacks its fine now but it took a lot of resolve to keep going.
Thats serious BTW -I wouldnt say that if it wasnt to help you.

Hello Trish, I hope you are ok now, it's scary when you can't breathe, sometimes when you are doing something like cooking, reading, on puter etc you can forget to breathe properly and just swallowing something like your own spit can lead to a reaction like you had, Don't worry about it if it was just a one off, it's just that you swallowed and just like you gulped a drink too
fast it went down the wrong hole. I hope thats is clear I don't know how else to explain it.

Hi Patricia:
The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. In fact, it happened twice, in the exact same spot in Tesco`s !
The first time was, say, just for a couple of seconds and then about 3 months later it was for much longer, perhaps 1/2 a minute. It was the most frightening that can happen to you. You don`t usually think about breathing and then, suddenly, nothing moves and you do!
I was just walking around shopping, not eating anything. So the Heimlich manoeuvre doesn`t help. I wasn`t under any stress at the time. In retrospect, I wondered if it could have been a reaction to some noxious fumes that I couldn`t smell, obviously. Doctor`s opinion was that it could have been a panic attack! Ha!
I DO empathize with you and hope that it was a one-off occasion.
