Hi, my computer will not turn off to the standby mode for the last few months. I am using XP. I recently erased the hard drive due to all the rubbish that me and the kids put on it and I was hoping that this would solve the problem but to no avail!! Any ideas on how I can find out what is causing this? Thanks Dave

Thought I should add that it does go on to stand by for approx 10 secs and then turns back on again! Thanks
something worth trying, go to device manager and see if there are any yellow question marks, if there are --particularly under "display adapters", your graphics drivers may need to be re-installed or updated

Thanks, just looked and no yellow flags there but worth a try!
in that case you may have to do a "repair" install of your XP because I am sure it is a function of Windows, the following may help
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobil ity/getstarted/hibernate.mspx
don't run any repairs
tfg is on the money

there are three things you need to have
1 a bios that supports APM (and you might have to enable it)
2 all the motherboard drivers installed
3 APM enabled in control panel

look in control panel | system | hardware
there should be no yellow flags

here is mine - look at the red dots

it won't be exact - but that's the idea
