Smoke machine for home party

I am looking to buy a smoke machine for a Halloween party for my kids and their friends but wondered, will it set off my smoke detectors? I wouldn't have thought so but have been given conflicting advice, suggesting that it may. Also, I watched a demo on You Tube where there was a tube attached to the nozzle for dispersal of the smoke. Do I need this? Oh and finally, are there any known risks from using the machine? I have been told that any effects on asthmatics are psychosomatic, as it is due to the expectance of wheezing due to the effect of the smoke. Just want to make sure. Any further tips are most appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on the smoke content, usually it's dry ice thawing straight to gas, carbon dioxide, so that should not set off the smoke alarm.
