Hotel trade wages

I don't, and never have, worked in the hotel trade. I recently stayed at a five-star hotel part of the De Vere chain, and was stunned to learn that the hourly rate was �4.60, for bar staff, cleaners, etc. How on earth can the top end of the trade pay such awful wages and expect people to do a decent job?

What I meant specifically was why are the wages so bad? Every member of staff I spoke to was unfailingly polite and efficient, hardly justifying such bad pay.

Oh lord, having just read your thread (and answered) above, please tell me you're not working at the Royal Bath!! I walked out after three hours in a job there. I got a job in their bar, having worked in a bar previously for about two years at home. They would't let me use the till, in fact they wouldn't let me serve people any drinks my job was and i quote "to stand by the door, look pretty and smile at the guests". And i was on less than �4.60, although it was a few years ago. It got to a point where i though sod this, walked "backstage" picked up my coat and walked out. Behind the scenes is grim and i'll never be able to stay in that hotel (my family use it a lot) and see it as quite so luxurious as you would think it is.

The answer is simple. As long as people are willing to work for that pittance they will pay it and with the current state of immigration and open borders policy etc they will get the manpower for the jobs without any problem. They can also pick and choose. They know that no one wants to make a career of it and want to use it only to get a foothold in this country while they go on to better things. So they do get applicants who are well groomed, well mannered and skilful. The applicant gets a wage much better than at home and the hotel chain gets cheap labour. and the queues for any jobs advertised is quite long beleive me. You will see that most of the cleaners are of east european origin. With europe expanding they are a endless supply.
