Contact the tax office. If your first job pays your full earnings before tax entitlement you should pay the basic rate on your second job. Your tax code on your second job should be "BR" for Base Rate.

If you bring this to the attention of the tax office they will alter your tax code on your first job to hopefully "slowly" pay back any tax owed and change the tax code on your seond job to "BT".

I am confused as to how your code on your second job was anything other than BR as a P45 is required to calculate a tax code - so your emaployer for your second job is responsible fo this error. This could be a bargaining tool woth the inland revenue.

You could leave the country!
You should have filled in a form P46 with your second employer as by law they either have to have a P45 or issue you with a P46. On this form you can state whether this is your only job.

My guess is that you will not have paid enough tax, depending on what your tax codes are - what are they?

Your second one should be BR for basic rate.
Second job tax code should read "BR"

Final part should read "with the inland revenue"

Tax codes are at the moment, !st job 609L- 2nd Job 603L Both jobs have tax relief items. Looking back at p60's both jobs have always had Numbers and a letter never BR.
Certainly sounds like you've paid too little tax. But if the second employer has always known you had another job then it may be their fault for not operating the right code. Regulation 185 of Statutory Instrument 2003 No. 2682;
The Income Tax (Pay As You Earn) Regulations 2003 says that tax that should have been deducted by the employer but wasn't doesn't have to be included in the employee's self-assessment.. Mention this when you talk to the tax office; they'll look blank but ask 'em to look it up. No guarantees but you may not be liable to pay the shortfall.
