A Japanese friend has just had a baby. Although she speaks English and is married to an English man, i would like to write a greeting in Japanese on the card i am making for them. I can find a sort of translation on babelfish, but do i write it left to right or top to bottom? I have looked on wikipaedia but it's very complicated! Can anyone help?

Why don't you give some thought to Haiku... it's appreciated by every Japanese person I've known... such as:
baby's breathe
upon mother's left breast
sweet surrender
Or, more whimsical:

All I know is it must be
Put into my mouth.
