Mattress for cotbeds. Confusion!!

Hi all. We are currently in the mattress buying minefield and just wanted a little advice.
We have bought our nursery furniture from mamas and papas but not got the mattress for our cotbed.yet. I'm looking at various websites with mattresses that range from �40 to �160! Now I feel that they have you by the short and curlies because the budget ones say 'Foam mattress' then the expensive ones are called things like 'Sleepsafe' foam and sprung. I feel like they have you over a barrel really. Is the expensive one really safer? Which is best? Foam or sprung? Or both? Who knew this would be so perplexing? Am I just being over cautious?

not sure whats "best" but i got the �40 one from argos and its soft but firm.... all i got told was it has to fit the cot exactly so baby cant get stuck down the sides, and the easier to clean the better because of leaking nappies etc

A child is very light, so a foam mattress is absolutley fine - if you are intending using the cot as their first bed, you need to consider what age they will be sleeping in it until. If you intend using it until they are e3 or 4, it may well be worth investing in a better quality (usually thicker) mattress. Remember that you childs bones and muscles are forming and you need them to be supported properly in relation to their weight. As for sprung v's foam, if you have ever slept in a crap sprung mattress, you would go for foam. If it is a sprung mattress is needs to be good quality or you will then need a topper for comfort. No mattress sold from a reputable company will be unsafe for your baby.
