MM Links Solutions October 2008 [Week 4]
19 Answers
I must warn you that points once again dried up for this fourth and final week and I conclude that getting points from King Ulysses the Valiant is just like pulling teeth! Not surprising he finished off his reign with the following chosen links based on the theme of Dentistry:
Tooth SOME
BLUE Blood
Gum SHIELD
FORKED Tongue
Not an easy set to predict ~ but one of you matched him in being devious!

Of the first 16 entrants only ex-champion, lysander, showed her BLUE BLOOD and scored the first set of TWO POINTS. After ten minutes of play, I began to feel that no-ones brain was wired for automatic short circuiting as the brain of King Ulysses but I had forgotten about the Strix-factor!! At 09.12, Strix appeared as Entrant #17 with the preamble Methinks Ulysses speaks with FORKED TONGUE whilst nursing his TOOTH SOME to claim FOUR POINTS! No other entrant proved the equal to this impressive performance and so (from the very beginning) I can declare Strix is my HOT SHOT OF THE WEEK.
*** Crowds cheer wildly at this awesome feat ***
*** Let drums roll and trumpets sound ***
With three of the links gone it took only another 10 minutes before Prescott came prepared for battle wearing a GUM SHIELD and claimed the last set of TWO POINTS. I would be seriously worried if both Strix & Prescott were on the same wave length as me!
The rest of the scorers picked up only the occasional single point. They included Jools, seekeerz, teacher1, ChrisHewat, Mr Ont-ice & keyboardix.
A warm welcome to newcomer rmleake and dont be put off by this difficult month!

But how did the October League Table finish up after four weeks of competition?
SIX POINTS: Dinkypuzzled
FOUR POINTS: beejay1124, lysander & Strix
THREE POINTS: fred1941, paulineward & seekeerz
TWO POINTS: BigMac, centino, ChrisHewat, Christiana, cliffyg, Dustybun, Elspeth, evsajo, Grenmus, kettledrum, Magyar, miss meg, Prescott, twix123, wickedtongue & x-ray
This being the last weekend in October, the time has come to select the MM Champion and decide who will set the Link Words across the five-week month of November. The clear top scorer is Dinky puzzled </b. who was our setter back in June 2008 (and so is ineligible for such a quick return)! That means that we need to look at the three entrants tied on Four Points. Once again, lysander is a recent MM Champion and is ruled out! Of the two remaining in the frame, we look for the big hitter. Here beejay1124 scored Two Points (twice) whereas Strix scored Four Points (once) and is therefore the bigger hitter (no letter has been dropped from this last word!).
I therefore invite Strix to contact me on <[email protected]>
My sincere thanks go to ulysses100 for a very entertaining month!
This is crofter signing off for another week.
See you next Saturday: Same time Same place New setter
Until then: HAPPY LINKING!
:o)

Oh dear, I had no blue blood, only a blue tongue - and thus no points. Congratulations to Strix for his double whammy and for being this month's champion - A worthy one, I'm sure, though not blue blooded either. I just hope he doesn't speak too much with forked tongue next month. Congratulations, too, to Dinkypuzzled for getting the highest score over the course of the month.
Thanks for the congrats, gang.
And the distinctly un-puzzled Dinky, thank you for standing aside and letting me have a go.
PAULINE, you minx what do you mean by a "missing letter" in crofter's write up - you who lure young flesh up from Wiltshire to your web in the north!
Christiana, I will do my best not to make you forked off with my links.

Thanks for the honourable mentions by the Shrubbery squad on Friday evening, and , yes Strix Ulysses31 does bear quite a distinct similarity to myself -- except that my beard is going grey around the edges ! And no tulips were to be found in flower on the north Norfolk coast yesterday (it was far too cold) ; although we did clock up an amazing 144 species in flower.
Honestly, when I was concocting my links I wasn't trying to be devious -- they were some of the first words to come into mind when I thought of the subject --- and, again, congratulations to pauline on again guessing (divining ?) the themes.
Thanks again to crofter for guiding me through the month, and to launching me on three of the weekends. And all hail to the conquering Strix with whom we will lock horns in November.

Would you Adam and Eve it ... absolutely nil points for me this month ... my old schoolmaster would say could and indeed should do better!!
Maybe next month will see an upturn in my fortunes .... perhaps a suitable bribe to Sir Strix will do the trick? Perhaps the shrubbery vixens can soften him up??
Thanks for an interesting month Ulysses even though we failed to see eye to eye, and thanks for keeping everything ticking over crofter, in your inimitable way!! (S) :O)
