i have a tried and trusted elec oil heater that is temp controlled - you can get them quite cheap now and well its lasted about 12 years now and still works really well and is very economic
first of all make sure you have your house welll insulated and draught proofed. Then try to get your power bills quarterly, set aside funds to meet the bill when it comes, don't be tempted to use a pre-payment meter they cost a heck of alot more.
set your heating and water timer to come on for an hour 3 times aday at the moment so that throughout the day the house is able to hold the heat and you aren't running the heating for 4 hours in the evening ust to take the chill off.

keep the water hot too, saves having to heat a full tank from cold.

Lag your hot tank, check with your energy providoe about home insulation and see if u are entitled to any grants
agree with above, for heating one room a electric oil filled radiator is the best option.
Sorry..I'm hijacking this as I don't wanna put up a new thread about it....lol Chuckie? Please?
I live in a one bed flat, central gaz heating, no double glazing.
Does it cost more to run all my radiators at once, or is it cheaper to turn some of them off?
wasn't this in another section...

if the thermostat is in the same room as the radiator you have an and as long as you keep all the doors to that room shut then yes it will be.

if neither of the above are the true then it will be far more expensive to only run the one rad as your boiler will be going flat out all the time and never bring the thermostat up to temp.

Thankyou all, am grateful ! Dot, what you said makes complete sense, I have been doing exactly what you said I shouldn't, heating on once a day to try and take it from freezing to ok. Will try and get to grips with the timer tomorrow. Thanks again x
so you can turn off radiators in "unused" rooms as long as they don't contain the main heating thermostat. but keep you doors shut all the time

Does that make sense.... it's late :)
Errr...I don't have a thermostat? I switch the heating on at the boiler, by pressing a small button.....
Morning milliepops,
We had a portable gas heater, picked up for a tenner complete with two full gas bottles from the local Lions club shop. Very easy to use and very cheap to run.
