They were more academically focussed and I was brought up learning to dance, play the flute and piano etc...whereas I was off and about teaching myself toplay the guitar, becoming an RAF cadet, going to Romania to do youth work, not wanting to go to uni but do nursing or paramedic training, changing from languages (my forte) at uni to a law degree, getting my nose and belly pierced....
I remember just before my first graduation, I had my hair dyed a DIY auburn colour and my mum said my father had said to her "she's not going to graduate with orange hair is she".
They paid for me to have it dyed back a "normal" colour.
Outcome, well they didn't always approve, often strongly disapproved but I did my own thing mostly anyway, though in a respectful way.
I also gave into them a lot, more when I was younger and didn't have so much choice (eg going to uni).
I've never regretted doing the things I did.
