The main characters name in each film is Vincent, but it is not supposed to be the same Vincent, just coincidence.. Ed Norton, Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe were considered for the part of Vincent before Tom Cruise.
The only other similarity in the films is that Collateral begins at an airport and ends in a subway and Heat begins on a subway and ends at the airport.

I'm a big Heat fan, I just love it.
I know the names are different, however I thought that perhaps Tom Cruise's character was moulded on Neil McCauley (De Niro in Heat). There are certain similarities:
-Hairstyle: an unusual short cut swept back hairstyle, identical for both characters
-Dress: well cut expensive italian grey suit, with white starched collar, no tie. May be a Michael Mann thing
-In Heat, McCauley talks to Edie (love interest) about his family, "Mum died when I was young, have a brother somewhere, Father, don't know where my father is". Cruise's character in Colateral says pretty much the same thing.
-I know it sounds far fetched, but the gait is the same. Watch Cruise walk through airport at start. Confident swager that I only ever saw again in Heat (De Niro approach into bank for major Heist).
Maybe he was playing with us.
