I don't think I realised just how dark it would be. I considered turning back......but even that seemed like a bad move.

Apart from not walking anywhere dangerous, you can get personal alarms, my mum got me one (country mum, city daughter :) ).

If in trouble, shout fire as it tends to get more attention.

Always walk confidently as if you know exactly where you are going and be vigilant.

So many people have no idea what is going on around them. I was at Victoria Coach station once which is riddled with pickpockets and thieves.

A guy was becoming a focus of attention and I ended up sitting by him and explaining quietly he was currently a sitting target and staying with him to warn the crooks off. He had no idea and just had his stuff all over, bags accesible etc...

I wouldn't even walk round our garden in the dark pasta. Too many trees and bushes..rustles and snapping twigs...shadows...

I suppose that as I am a 'native New yorker'.......my local park seems tame..and I STILL have my NYC stride.....lol

I'd been to a gig at De Montfort Hall once, and took a stroll across this tree-lined area, which I assumed was a park. Loads of folk around, yet I saw two people attacked within 5 minutes of each other! Horrendous.

Forgive me if this sounds facetious but aren't the Darwin Awards about people who know they are doing something very dangerous and silly but still do it?

My advice is don't make yourself an easy target, take as many precautions as you can.
