i have just removed a load of polystyrene tiles from a ceiling which has left behind a series of shallow adhesive dots. What is the best way of getting a smooth ceiling? I'm thinking of either a fresh skim coat of plaster (or similar) or wallpapering with something like anaglypta, however I am not an expert at either task. I'm looking for the simplest solution.

Whilst it gives the smoothest results, skimming may not be the simplest solution.  We had a similar thing done in our house and the adhesive dots 'bled' through the plaster, almost like grease marks, that not even a few coats of paint covered.  Not sure whether that was the result of a less than diligent plasterer, but I'd certainly check this before you go ahead and plaster the whole ceiling.
I would employ a plaster to cover the existing ceiling with new plasterboard, and then to skim that. It will give the best finish, and no one will notice the ceiling is a few mm lower. You would not have had to take down the old tiles to do this, and could have saved yourself a bit of work as well

We had this in our bathroom a few years ago, they are vile things i dont understand why anyone would want to put those ruddy things up but hey ho!

We used a paint with sand or seomthing in it not sure as i didnt do it myself, but before that we sanded it down abit to get rid of rough edges, other than that if you dont want to plaster it you could have it artexed(not sure of that is spelt properly) to whatever design you want its pretty easy to do as well

Try using a wallpaper steamer to steam these off, then unibond and fill any cracks with a fine filler like gyproc joint cement, sand off and paint.
