Do this sum in your head and don't use a calculator or pen and paper. Just give it a go.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

Don't know
5000
6000
4100

By the by, if your posting your answer, don't go into too much detail as it might take away from other peoples theories.

keyplus90.....'trick question'? Dont mistrust everything and dont be embarrassed to be found wrong.

'course, something obvious is missed but it's only a game.
How is it possible to get any answer except 4100?
Flobadob, is the answer definitely one of those you've listed?

I came up with 4100, but having looked at the question again, I believe I may have spotted something that would give an answer that you haven't listed.
4100. How can it be anything else?

Yes, the answer is 4100, but as you can see, a lot of people think it is 5000. I got 5000 when I did it and I text it to 15 people and 12 of those people said 5000. Also one of the guts who got it right told me at the time that he didn't understand the point of it as it was so obvious the answer was 4100, but when he went to the bar that night he showed it to different people and hardly anyone got the correct answer.
Oddly enough, no one chose the one answer that could not fail . . . Don't know . . . unless they did . . . <"?
I came up with the right answer, but it seemed too easy, so I was toying with the idea that it may be a bit of a trick question. Looking at it again, I discerned that the first word was 'take', which could also mean 'minus'. 'Aha!', cried Miss Marple (aka Naomi). .Should we 'take' the first thousand off, and just add the rest, thus reaching a completely different conclusion?' Sneaky, eh?!!! Could have been - but it wasn't. Far too clever for my own good at times!! :o)
