filming war scenes

even in old films i am puzzled how they film war scenes- surely it is impossible in one take
do the crew dress up as soldiers to avoid being spotted during the numerous camera angles- or is it the editors job to cut out any discrepecies?

Extras are used for armies, tali, and if filming abroad sometimes the army of that country is used - so there's never a shortage of soldiers. A battle can (sort of) be filmed in one take using 3, 4 or maybe 5 cameras. Then it's the editor's job to sift out the best bits and put them together.
