Yes Ice, the spout was what you spoke into, they were bigger than the microphones of today, and partial to working themselves loose and dropping off.
It used to be so funny sometimes - you'd see a telephonist shouting at the subscriber, and getting louder and louder - not realising their spout had dropped off.
We had some fun times in the telephone exchange. Supervisors kept a close eye on you to make sure you got on with your work, but we still managed to have some laughs.
