Hard disk capacity

My 10gb hard disk is getting quite full, the free capacity reading 1.12gb. To free up space I have deleted about 80 songs but my free space is still 1.12gb. Can anyone explain why this is please? I believe this should have freed up about 300mb.

Sorry All, I have just realised I had forgotten to empty the recycle bin. The free space has now gone up by about 240mb. Please ignore me.

If you are using XP there are a couple of other simple safe things you can do too, although you may be aware of these here goe's anyway....

As at regular times XP creates a restore point, you may want to delete all but your latest one. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Clean Up select the Second tab More Options and it's all from there (this includes unused programs).....Then you have Tab One which has the tick boxes, it's safe to delete all the bit's in there.

 

Finally in control Panel you can select Internet Options where (although this is a tiny amount of space) you can delete your cookies, history and saved pages....if you do this though and use password auto complete ensure you know all your passwords and log in names...for example next time you log onto AB you will need to enter your user name and Password as of course the above will have deleted the stored info.

Disc defragment might help free up a little bit of space too.

Thanks for those suggestions. I am on 2000 Professional but wil soon need to upgrade for larger hard disk capacity anyway.

yes do upgrade HDDs r so cheap nowadays anyhow. by the way defraging the HDD will NOT FREE SPACE but is recomended as it reorganises your disk files so that large files have all their bits closer together and the most accessed ones r near the begining of the disk that is very handy to help speed startup as these r the most used files they will certainly get reorganised for better speed

If you hold the shift key and then press the one with the word "Delete" on it then the files are deleted rather than sent to the recycle bin and you'll immediately see the difference in free space.
Remember that doing this doesn't leave you with the option of going to the recycle bin and restoring the file(s).
