hi
wondered if anyone could offer me any suggestions. i want to buy a christmas present for a very grown up 13 yr old girl. i know she is interested in the struggle of women left at home during the war, so something fictional based on fact maybe. i have done some looking and all that seems to come up is 'the stripped pyjamas' and 'the book thief'
any help would be great
thanks

Nella Last's war ...(The diary of Housewife 49 ) by Richard Broad is a great book .
She was a woman living in Barrow in Furness who kept a diary for the mass observation unit .It was also made into a television programme starring Victoria Wood which is out on DVD .So you could treat her for both !

Hi
She might like to have a look at the People's War website from the BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/
There are tons of memories and stories from women, men and children on the Home Front and a list of book recommendations.
Fiction-wise, I would suggest Back Home by Michelle Magorian? (who also wrote the fantastic Goodnight Mister Tom). http://www.amazon.co.uk/Back-Puffin-Books-Mich elle-Magorian/dp/0140319077
