I've just bought a DVD writer and a pack of blank DVDs for 55. If you only ever want to save just these 4 tapes then that might not be such a bargain for you but the quality of movie that you can fit onto a standard CD (700MB) is quite different from that on a DVD (4700MB).
As for what software you'd need and how to wire up your VHS to your PC - I've no idea.
i have connected an analogue camcorder to my pc and recorded the vhs-c cassettes (45 mins) onto my pc and then burned them onto a cd
companies like hauupage and pinnacle specalise in this- all it requires is a usb connection- that would be best option rather than an internal fitting of hardware

I did this only last week, I bought a 30 TV capture card and conected the VCR to it as I would the aerial.

The only problem I came across was I had to lower the output frequency on the VCR (via a little screw in the back) as the default for some reason had interferance from the TV.

Hope this helps too....all in all...Easy to do  8-)
