I get phoned up daily by the same person pretending to be from different organisations. I have tried just putting the phone down but that doesn't work. Last night I tried shouting before putting the phone down. The phone number is not witheld but is unavailable, does this mean it comes from abroad? How can I block these calls. I'm with post office homephone.
Thanks everyone

I am sure there is a system where you can ask your phone provider to block a particular number. Take a note of the number, contact your phone supplier and request that you do not want to receive any calls from that number. I think I am right in saying that should do the trick.
what is the number?
Blow a whistle down the phone, I did it twice and the calls stopped!!

When I use the 1471 thing all I get is ''number unavailable'' so I don't know the actual number, perhaps I should ask for it.

so how come you say it is not withheld?
I quite like some of these calls and keep them on phone ages thinking they are getting somewhere then I just hang up :-)
4get there are 2 standard recordings on 1471. The number is witheld or the number is not available. I think it says witheld if someone has physically put in 141 before dialling,

but does it say both ever?
no it either says
"the caller withheld their number"
or " we do not have the callers number for you to return the call"

The whistle and stringing them along seems like a good idea

Try phoning the BT freephone number for nuisance phone calls. Number in the directory.
Here's some ideas for you :)

If the number is not available, it might be an extension on a switchboard
get anon call reject from your phone provider, if someone calls and witholds their number the call wont be connected, but if the number is unavaiable, usually from abroad it wont stop it. ive had it for years and its very good
