Catalytic Converter - Peugeot 206

Hi,
My car is 5 years old and i've just had the CAT replaced on it. The mechanic said that they generally have a guarantee of 1 year.

Is this right for a Peugeot 206 1.1?

Also, how can a CAT be damaged?

from new it would have had a 3 year gurantee as a replacement 1 year is probably about right. They dont really get damaged unless the car has hit something underneath, generaly it is a wear and tear item, part of the exhaust. They often break up inside with age or just good old rust

driving through puddles damages them they get incredibly hot and the cold water can make the shatter
