what's the name of the old hand-cranked copier machines that used a special purpley ink that smelt a bit weird and as far as i remember was only used in primary/junior schools?  something like 'Banda'?

Yes indeed the Banda machine, made by a company called Nig Banda.

Oh that smell........

I seem to think it was called a 'gastetna' (don't kinow about the spelling - sorry)
The Nig Banda machine which uses the purple alcohol based ink and the mimeograph (of which Gaestetner is an example) are quite different. The mimeograph requires a pre-cut stencil that ink is forced theough onto the paper.
Oh the memories. Gestetner - remember trying to cut scientific diagrams onto the stencil also the pink correcting fluid; always ended up covered in black ink. Banda, oh the smell of the fluid! could even do it in different colours. Photocopiers - boring and always break down. Lol.
Just thought you'd like to know, the Gestetner factory in Northampton is still going strong, so someone is still using them!
sddsddean, I think they are now into the photocopier business.
