Wiring a socket

I'm not really a handyman but I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me where I could find an idiot's guide on rewiring a socket.  I'm trying to replace the sockets around my home. Thanks in advance.

Also you need to remember if you are in the UK that a new law came into force on 1st January 2005 relating to DIY electrical work. I am not sure what exactly is covered by the law, but might be worth checking it out.

The new law is no problem if you are just replacing an existing socket. There are only 3 wires to attach, so just look at the socket you are taking off before unscrewing the wires. Oh and don't forget to pull the fuse so you don't get a belt!!

only thing is, modern plugs only let you get to the fuse and dont allow you to get to the wires. so which part are you rewiring, the plug or socket?

Partly true.

If you are undertaking electrical work in a bathroom, kitchen or outside you need to be qualified as a "Competant Person" otherwise your work must be approved by building standards

Basically, you can wire your sockets but not in the kitchen.

If you know that little, I'd pay an electrician rather than blow yourself up.
