Has anyone identified the first village? It's 5 miles north east of East Dereham. Clue says - this village features in a 17000 line literary work. It was here (albeit spelt differently) that one of its characters lived (" as digne as water in a dich"). Think this is Chaucer 's Reeve's Tale. Any help appreciated.

Many thanks. What is the literary work mentioned? Clue was a bit vague-just 17000 line literary work!
How can the clue be a bit vague when you have (virtually) solved it?
How many villages are there 5 miles north east of East Dereham?

OK, so it's seven miles from Dereham: close enough for me!
