I've also seen other responses which are really quite insulting, insinuating that the question poser is too thick to do the crossword or quiz in question.
You are right, this website is all about helping each other out and not an outlet for bigheaded rude people to run others down.

Giving both answers to Where Was I? is giving the complete answer. Giving the answer to a few clues to a crossword is not exactly giving the whole solution. That is the difference. Anyone could just get the answers to Where Was I? from Answerbank without even trying to work it out, whereas a crossword clue just helps them on their way.

I sympathise with you too. The definition of 'competition' is a trial of ability, a contest of skill.
If one is given the answers then the person who enters is competing by default. If you are unable to unravel the competition criteria then simply do not enter.
Yes indeed, the competition does not close until Wednesday evening each week, therefore there is ample opportunity for research - and Google always comes up with the answers. But when people request the answers on a Sunday, they are obviously going to be met by adverse comments.
I am always prepared to guide someone in the right direction by giving an additional clue to the answer - but of course, I often struggle myself.
You gotta be in it to win it. But equally, if you cannot work it out, stay out.
Incidentally, good luck.
