I went to the doctors last monday to confirm my pregnancy, I was 5 weeks...first the doc said they don't confirm them they believe that if the patient has done the test and hasn't had a period then they are pregnant which is fair enough.
But....I wanted to see what you thought I should do with this next piece of advice he gave...., he said that he thinks we should wait just yet before he referred me to see a midwife as it's early stages and ''we don't really know whether the pregnancy will even continue'' (his exact words), whilst I sat there shocked at his comments he also added that since I was ''abit of an expert on the pregnancy front'' (this is my SECOND child!) that I could wait at least 4-5 weeks yet to see what happens with the pregnancy instead of referring me.
Quite mad with myself for not sticking up for myself and saying something back but I was so shocked I just sat there and listened! x
What do you all think? x

as above if its upset you complain... However IMO 5 weeks bit early to be down the Dc's. Some people are that much late.
I have never phoned Dc's unitill atleast 8 weeks and even then Your Dc's comment has been right about it continuing.
Also....if this is your 2nd then you should remember how emotional you were in the 1st tri...so..sit back relax & dont let things stress you out.

In the early stage of pregnancy tis best just test urine for confirmation.

Me thinks the doc was trying to save you an internal examination, which could be detrimental to the feotus.

Since its your 2nd.....what proof were you looking for? I agree with the doc in not appointing you a midwife, as tis 'early days'.

not the nicest way of saying it but i think what he meant was that midwives wont usually do a booking in appt and then arrange scans until 8-10 weeks (scan for 12 weeks).

Until that point (unless any medical reason or history of problems) there is no need to see your GP or midwife.

I was told pretty much the same thing when I foud out I was 5wks pregnant,(1st baby) I was a bit surprised, like you, by my GPs response. Wait a couple of weeks and ask again to be referred to the MW. As Redcrx said the MW probably won't see you till 8-10 weeks anyway. Try not to worry too much in the mean time. I believe that doctors no longer do a pregnancy test to confirm pregnancy. The first 'test' is the first scan.

Hi loza, my doctor did a urine sample to confirm my pregnancy. I was only 4-5 weeks. Perhaps it depends on the GP. I didnt see MW until 8 weeks for my booking appointment though.

When I had my first child (who is now 17) the Doctor didn't do a test to confirm that I was pregnant, he just said to book myself in for one of the ante-natal clinics the surgery ran. He was rather dismissive of me I thought (I was really excited but got nothing but a stoney face off him), so I booked in with another GP at the surgery.

terambulan, they don't do internal examinations routinely during pregnancy. Or at least they didn't with me, so now I'm wondering if I missed out!!

I can see your GPs point, as not many women would even know at 5 weeks. However, depending where you are, it can take a few weeks to be seen by a midwife for an initial appointment, so he should probably have referred you anyway.

When I found out I was expecting I contacted my health centre to find out who I needed to see, so they made an appt with the nurse for a week later. I went to see the nurse, who told me if I'd done a test she didn't need to do one, and to make appt with M/W myself, so I did. Never saw a GP once, so if I were you I'd just call the health centre and make an initial appt with your M/W!!

I went to see my GP when I found out I was pregnant - I was 5 weeks gone. Saw the midwife today (am now 7+2) and we've sorted out the dates for my bloods and my 1st scan etc. I wonder if it varies from local authority to local authority. I've got one little boy who's coming up to 2, and I've had 2 miscarriages this year, so maybe I am uber sensitive, but I think saying "we don't even know whether the pregnancy will contine" is an absolutely AWFUL thing to say. I think you're quite right for being shocked. I hope you carry on to have an easy and enjoyable pregnancy and this hasn't upset you too much

Sounds like a typical, insensitive male doctor, who lacks any kind of bedside manner.

When I did my own test at 4 weeks, I went to see my doctor, who also said they wouldn't retest as shop bought kits are the same as used at the surgery. She then said she would send a fax through to the hospital of my choice, requesting a scan at 7 weeks. I was then contacted by the hospital 2 weeks later.

If there is another doctor at your surgery, I would ask to see him/her.

Change your doctor! No ones expecting them to jump around with excitment for you, but there's no need to be a total insensitive grump about it! Doctors with a good bedside manner are few and far between!!

I actually had five tests done when I was first pregnant - two of my own at home, two at different chemist's - and one at the doctor's - just to make sure!!! Lol.

I never had any internal examinations, and I think your doctor shoud've explained that these days, home pregnancy testing kits are very accurate. Therefore, when you got a positive result, he should've tested himself. However, booking you in to see a midwife isn't always necessary straight away.

I have since been back to the doctors and seen a female doctor that I used to have before they suddenly put me with the doctor I was telling you about.
I am pleased to say she agreed with me in regards to the comment made to me, and said that no matter how far you are the doctor's duty is to refer you straight away to a midwife , unless YOU (the patient) are having doubts whether you want to carry on with the pregnancy.
She's a lovely doctor and I will be ensuring all my further appointments are made with her.
She also checked my blood pressure, and listened to my breathing, she also had a feel around of my tummy. I do beleive that this the same treatment I had with my first child...from another female doctor in the same surgery.
