Advice please: Wireless PCI card for desktop pc
2 Answers
What wireless pci card do I need for when I get a wireless router from Sky to use when they have setup my broadband with them next week? The newer desktop pc runs Pentium 4 & is WinXP Professional.
I only just bought it as bankrupt stock and so far cant log on with the Pentium 4 WinXP machine using the USB ADSL modem supplied by my present ISP.
I feel this newer pc is still setup for an office server/network which I dont want or need.
I want a plain ordinary home pc setup like my present setup uses?
The USB adsl modem works fine with my old 11yr pc desktop so I know its OK and have been using it since 2005 but I dont have a setup disc for the ADSL and if did would be out of date by now?
I think the newer pc is still setup for an office network server environment which I dont have and I dont want.
How do I alter the settings in the network configuration and set up the needed TCP/IP protocols that so I can use the pc with my present USB ADSL modem now and for when I have to change over to wireless when get sky broadband and wireless?
Grateful for any particular site can direct me to so can read how to reset the pc to work as a plain ordinary home pc and/or anything to tell me what wireless pci to get.
Thanks all.

You don't need a wireless card for your desktop
You connect it using a cable, the only benefit of wireless is portability and you hardly likely to want to walk about the house with your desktop.
Wireless is less secure, less reliable and far slower than wired.
When you get your wireless router simply plug the cat5 cable into the back of the desktop and the other end into the router and it will work without any setup needing to be done on the computer
if you want to use your USB modem until you get the router then you simply need to download the drivers for it, install them and then setup a connection using your broadband username and password. (or if you have the disk that came wth the modem that may work, though the new PC will probably be Vista so it might not!)
You are somewhat over complicating things, you have no need to change anything about the TCP/IP protocols at all, the network setup is essentially the same regardless if used on a home or a business network.
