I bought a set of compatible cartridges for my Epson
R245 printer, and found that the printer doesn't like them
and refused to function.

Am I wasting money, or should I try again, using a
different supplier of compatible carts.?

I've found that re-filled ink tanks by a reputable dealer who offers a guarantee usually work ok overall.
The compatibles are mostly a waste of money, very few are made by conscientious manufacturers in the ROC, although the odd one does use the right ink. Importers usually pick the cheapest ones so get the rubbish.
just had the same problem with a R285
always been OK on previous printers - seems its something Epson have done
Look for generation 6 they work on ours
