Having a dog spayed

Hi can anyone help with general information regarding my new dog. My husband and I have adopted a lovley little scottie who is an ex-breading dog she is approx 4-5 and although quite nervy (early days ) she is becoming affectionate. We would like to have her spayed but we do not have any of her history any advice would be appreciated. We already have an elderly male scottie who we have had for 11 years he is already neutered and a darling.

I recommend asking your vet about spaying. Most are now in favour of it. Presumably you have - or will - taken her to the vet to get her jabs, ask at the same time.

Congratulations on your new little dog. Pleased to hear she's settling in well. But I'm quite surprised that she han't already been spayed, as with female dogs who have been used for breeding, the breeders usually arrange to have a dog spayed when it's of no further use to them for breeding purposes, and to prevent new owner's from breeding from the animal. It would be worth checking with your vet, to see if he can find any indication that she has already been spayed. Incidentally, how do your two dogs get on together.

The best time to spay a bitch is about three months after a season, but if you do not know when she was last in you will have to take a chance and ask your vet to do her. If you know when she was last bred from you can work it back to nine weeks before they were born, then take about two - three weeks off that to work out when she was last in season.

It won't harm her to be spayed even if she is due in season again, it just makes it easier to do them about halfway between.

Thank you everyone for your kind interest and advice. We have now named her Megan and she gets on very well with our Ollie (she as already taken over the bed). She has had her first jabs and the vet thinks she is a lovely dog, we do not know why but she hasn't been speyed we have discussed it with our vet. As it isn't a problem to any of us at this moment not even Ollie who is nuetered and as my husband remarks Ollie is more interested in his football we are going to arrange it for after christmas.
