I would really appreciate help. My father who is 69 and lives with my Mam 67 previously had bowel cancer which he has never really recovered from. After having diarrhoea for 3 months which is under investigation he has developed abcesses and a fistula which means he is incontinent , he needs help with dressings and bathing they also have extra expense for washing clothes, heating and hot water. does anyone know if he will be entitled to benefits . They do have savings but not much.

hope this helps with what you're looking for
your mother would definately be entitled to carers allowance and you should be more than entitled to having some home care provided ie someone coming in to help with the care of your father. he should be entitle to incontinence pads also to help things. he may not want to wear them but alot better than soiling his own clothes. i work in a residential home so i do understand the type of personal care your father needs.
You could also ask his cancer nurse about a Macmilan cancer support grant. Or contact macmillans helpline direct on 0800 500 800
here's a good site to find out about benefit entitlement.

Your doc should be able to organise a rest-home for him if ur mother can't cope.
Also ask your local Age Concern they were very good at helping me to sort out benefits and filling in the tremendous amount of complicated forms.
Yes, they probably qualify for Attendance Allowance, a Carer's Allowance and maybe Mobility Allowance too, at least, ask Age concern to help, they will know which forms to fill in for them, get in touch with them, they are really helpful............hope this helps.............welsh

thank you everyone for your help Im going to age concern tomorrow.
Carers allowance can only be paid to working age careres
If you telephone The Pension Service 0845 60 60 265 they can arrange a home visit for someone to go through every benefit your father/mother could apply for.
He could apply for Attendance Allowance and if obtained your mother could apply for Carers allowance. Because she is receiving Retirement Pension she will not actually be able to receive any money but will get what is called Underlying Entitlement.
Once these benefits are in place they could apply for Pension Credit. If they are entitled to this then the rate they get will be increased with a Carers Premium because of the Underlying Entitlement.
Hope this helps
