Rome and Paris during Christmas

I am traveling to Rome and Paris at Christmastime. I am concerned that it gets dark so early at that time of year. Should I be concerned about safety? Most of the travel guides address the travel season and really don't talk about things during the holidays. Is there something that would be a "must see" at any of those locations? Any places of the cities that I should avoid?

My travel guide to Paris (The AA Essential Guide to Paris), which I bought last week as I'm off to Paris in February, says - 'Some areas are best avoided at night: around the Gare du Nord, Les Halles and the Grands Boulevards between Repulique and Richelieu-Drouot.'

As to must sees - how about the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and Notre Dame?

the winter days in Paris are a bit longer than London and in Rome quite a lot longer: Christmas day sunrise 7.37, sunset 4.45 (London sunrise 8.06, sunset 3.56).

Italy seems to have more pickpockets than other countries, but zip your purse up in an inner pocket and you'll probably be okay. Mainly, don't go where it's dark or deserted if you can help it in either city.

They are like any big city, and if you use your common sense you will be perfectly safe. Don't advertise your valuables, don't walk down dark alleys etc.

Thank you all for the info. We are from a very small town in Nevada, so we are a little worried about the big cities especially when it gets dark so early.

oh, sorry, when I mentioned London time I assumed you were in the UK. You'll probably find Rome daylight similar to Nevada's, but Paris days comparatively short at that time of year. Both are touristy cities so you should find plenty of well lit places after dark. Lil O'lady's advice is good (good for most places, in fact.) Have a nice Christmas!
