I teach adults who need help with reading and sums. I have been told by my boss that I can set up a course for 6 -8 weeks, one afternoon per week on any subject I like. I cannot get an oven or I would do cooking - any other suggestions? I also take them out to museums so thats already covered. I am looking for imaginative & interesting subjects. Help!
gardening, interior design. self esteem, parenting, job application/ interview skills, arts and crafts, using the internet. ask them their views on what would be most interesting
Argos catalogues are great for this type of thing. They are free and they encourage folks to look at pictures, read the info and work out the cost (reading and sums). Plus, nearly every household has one.
Clearly the exercise that you use depends on the ability of your group but some examples are:
1 - How many irons are you able to buy for under 15?
2 - What page do the watches start on?
3 - Cut out the picture of your favourite duvet cover.
I used to use argos catalogues when I worked with young people leaving care. They used them to work out just how much money they needed to buy everything they needed to furnish their flats.
I work with adults with a learning disability also and I like to do things with them to build their confidence. I have found a great way to do this is through music and getting them to sing.
The changes I have seen in some of them is amazing.
Which city are you based in please?
