Hello, I am getting a baby tortoise for my fella this weekend for his birthday, I know everything about them apart from one thing...what do they like to sleep in/on???

If it's only a baby you might have to keep it indoors in the warmth and keep it awake, as it is unlikely to have put on enough weight to hibernate. Next winter, I would suggest you contact a vet to get it weighed to see if it is heavy enough to hibernate. If it is by then, it should sleep in a hay lined sturdy box, in a cool place, but not where frost can get at it. You will need to check on it from time to time, as they can wake up if the weather turns warmer, but they usually wake up in the Spring. Hope all goes well.
These sites should help, dont use straw, as it contains mites that can cause disease, I believe silver sand is used in vivariums, but would ask the breeder for advice.
