How do i kill a mature tree that is overshadowing my garden, without chopping it down?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I don't mean to sound negative and I fully appreciate how you feel but if you do kill a mature tree in-situ, then it's going to fall down anyway at some point. This will probably be when and where you don't expect it to, thus causing substantial havoc and damage. Since you will then need to dispose of said dead, fallen tree you would be better off paying for it to be professionally felled (or at least pruned) in the first place. You might also like to consider that some species are protected and also that whoever owns the tree may not be amused by it's sudden demise.
To kill a mature tree slowly, hammer some copper nails into the base of the tree. The nails have to be long enough to penetrate past the bark.
Alternatively drill holes into the base of the tree at a downwards angle and pour creasote or weedkiller into the holes every week.
if the tree in question is a connifer, or other evergreen tree, repeated spraying of the foliage with a strong weedkiller should do the trick.
Don't do this to too many trees!!!!
