divorce
my friend has been married since feb this yr and has been lied to consistently. He works very hard and long hours to pay the mortgage and a few bills and his wife says that she pays the other bills but is infact not doing so. she gives him the odd 10 here and there but spends everything else. She ridicules him constantly in public and he is so unhappy and he wants a divorce.he has tried talking to her about this and she either shutsdown and denies there is a problem or flies off the handle. are these grounds for a divorce? i have looked on the net to find out if he can get divorced and under the uk law he has to be married a year. would he be able to start preparing the papers before this? also he has a mortgage with his wife which he pays, but with the recent fall in house prices the house is now in negative equity, would he be able to buy her out (even though he put a substantial deposit down) and the house is at a loss or if he sold it would she have to bare half the debt?

A judicial separation on the grounds of her unreasonable behaviour might be possible, and this will enable the finances of the marriage to be finalised. However he will need to resubmit for a divorce in February with futher costs and given that its now December and we have holidays in December its probably not worth it.
The question re: the house depends on whose name the mortgage is under.
