Lyme disease is a wood tick born bacteria that has serious ramifications for dogs as well as humans. Great Britain has seen about a 10 fold increase in the disease in the last 10 years. We, here in the U.S. have dealt with the disease since it's discovery in 1975...
Lyme disease is carried by ticks (often from deer). People can catch it as well as dogs.

By the way rats carry Leptro. (part of the usual annual vaccination), they do not carry and are not responsible for lyme disease.
