Turbos need oil + air to operate there is also a way by right to work the turbo but no-one ever does, when starting cars with a Turbo they should be run for approx 2-3mins to let the oil circulate the same should be done when stopping the car, the turbo should be given time to stop but that's another story, you may be lucky with what you have stated but I will still stand by my statement.
back pressure does not mean you necessrily have a major problem, work out the simple problems it may be before assuming the worst, for example a lot of dipsticks have clips at the base of the handle that if loose can cause the dipstick to rise an inch or so.
you did not mention black smoke, this could be a bad injector, it could be the engine is sooted up or something of this nature.
I would give it a good service, change the oil and filters, redex, give it a good run up the motorway. engine problems are not always terminal and you should try out the cheaper options before you start panicking about major failures.

possibility that the impeller has collapsed inside the turbo, which could cause back-pressure if the build up of pressure inside the turbo cant get through, if this is the case theres a possibility theres oil escaping through the turbo also. in my experience of back pressure 9/10 time sit does result in a major problem.
