some example of what i mean are, such as a friend said he was growing his hair long, an i said oh good, i like that, and he said, don't really care if you like it or not. for no reason at all. almost like a sort of tourettes where the speaker has to instantly be a bit harsh and go against anythin you say...then pulls back...such as sayin to them 'you only called me as a last resort' and he says 'you are', then denies sayin it or makes it into a joke...its just instant and automatic cruelty... but instantly forgotten...
i said id left my bank card in the shop once...and he said 'you would', 'cos you're stupid'...i was tryin to think of where he could have left his!
he asked me to put cream on his leg and as i was doin it, he started messin an grabbin my hand...i said 'stop, you want me to do it properly dont you?', he instantly just said 'i dont really care in the slightest'...
like he just has to oppose whatever is said for no logical reason...
he also seems not to know he is doing it...its just automatic
any ideas of a way to describe this?

Is this person very insecure? Sometimes people think "well, she doesn't like me anyway, might as well give her a reason!"....In any case, not a very good basis for friendship!
After a couple of those remarks, I can tell you I'd have trouble convincing my foot to remain very far from their backside!

Gainsayer is a fine old-fashioned word. TV news organisations always seem to have them on tap. The instant any expert or relevant organisation - the Government, the Church, medical researchers etc - puts some idea forward, you can guarantee BBC News will have someone in front of the cameras to dismiss the whole thing as wrong. Sami Chakrabarti of LIberty is a perfect example...a knee-jerk opponent.
