17a Just winning a crown with a bouquet (5,2,1,4) ????? ?Y ? ????

I think 17a will be "????? by a nose" but can't think what.

thanks for that, it will give me something to think about. I'd thought rose but it was vague 'nose' seems to fit clue better

Yes that does seem to go with arriving and the 'An' part would fit with 'ahead by a nose'. Think I will run with that as it seems right. Thank you Vicasso
